Louisiana law (R.S. 17:24.10) requires all K–3 students to be screened in Literacy and Numeracy within the first 30 days of school, and again in December and April. The K–3 Numeracy Screener, combined with teacher observations and formative assessments, helps identify students at risk for math difficulties early—before they impact long-term learning.
Early numeracy is a strong predictor of future math success. The screener gives teachers valuable data to adjust instruction, target interventions, and track student progress throughout the year.
The screener is administered one-on-one in an interview format. In grades 2 and 3, students also complete a portion independently. For information on the K–3 Literacy Screener, visit the Literacy Screener page on our website.
